Taxes

The Town has the authority to assess three types of property taxes - real estate, business personal property, and public utility taxes. The rates are set each year by the Town Council.

All real property (land) within the Town is assessed real property taxes annually, on a fiscal year basis (June to July), based on the value of the land and any improvements located thereon. The taxes are billed and collected on the Town's behalf by Charles County. The property values are set/determined by assessors from the State of Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation (SDAT). Assessments are conducted every three years. The majority of properties in the Town were last assessed in late 2017 and the values established during this assessment will be used to calculate the real property taxes for fiscal years 2019 to 2021. The next assessments will take place in late 2020. If you have questions about the assessment process or assessed value of your property, you should visit the SDAT website, email the local assessment office, call 301-932-2440, or fax 301-932-2189.
