Bee City USA

In 2023, the Town of La Plata was officially designated a Bee City USA affiliate. The Bee City USA program endorses a set of commitments, defined in a resolution, for creating sustainable habitats for pollinators, which are vital to feeding the planet. A Bee City USA designation’s purpose is to raise awareness of the role pollinators play in our communities, encourage healthy habitats, and celebrate achievements. Our committee is in place to provide a commitment to the pollinators by and creating and maintaining sustainable habitats. One in three bites of food we eat is courtesy of insect pollination and 90% of the world’s flowering plants depend on pollinators to reproduce.

La Plata's Bee City USA hive mind includes the following but always welcomes new members and visitors:

  • Cassandra Morris, Chair
  • Kelly Phipps, Director of Legislative Services, Staff Liaison
  • Paul Billeter
  • Jeanine Harrington, Director of Planning
  • Shelley Posey
  • John Posey
  • Tracey Stuller
  • Chris Wagnon

Monthly meetings are held virtually every 2nd Friday via Microsoft Teams. All members of the public are welcome to attend. Send email to Keep La Plata Beautiful to get a link to join the meeting or call in by phone.
